Block week exercise

 Block week exercise

The block week exercise we did for media consisted of a 4 hour sequence in which we filmed a short

music video in which we had to mime ourselves to harry styles song ‘as it was’, this was to explore and

use creativity to create a music video compiled of the three groups shooting at the same time.

Here is a photo of me operating the moving camera being pushed by max. This is a great opportunity to

get used to different camera set ups and co.

This is our group photo in which we also tried to get the right shot or angle of the camera so it looks as if

we are lying right below the camera lenses ( I mean below the tripod camera not my iPhones one).

Workshop 3 - first music videos

Workshop 3 - first music videos

This is the first ever music video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq4K9sKf62s

A great example of a new / modern day music video with the same effects used just cleaner is Eminems

diss track to Machine Gun Kellys called ‘kill shot’ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsPadN09N4A

Ac Dc is another great example of artists exploiting the internet and digital imagery early as they used a

music video very early on for one of thier songs called “can i sit next to you girl” -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biaGJ_4rEzE

Another famous person that gets a lot of their views because of their creative videos are a group called OK

GO!

Taylor Swift is another example with music videos getting millions if not billions of views such as - ‘you

belong with me’ which has 1.3 billion views, bad blood with 1.5 billion and shake it off with 3.1 billion

views!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuNIsY6JdUw - you belong with me

Analysis of artworks

Green day - American idiot - communist hand, very like power to the people and also overall love or hurt

from the bleeding heart. Levi Strauss - binary opposition as heart connotes love and this one is shaped of

heart so love and hate.

Taylor swift - fearless

Looks empowered women, lion mane, male gaze and image of a nerd to make her ‘glow up’ bigger?

Colours are all merged and look and feel the same.

Have done my images on word as the internet did not work for me :(

Workshop 2 with matt

Finding a artist. and their individual look as they are up and coming.

Finding a target audience for the audience and intertextual audiences, certain looks and styles so images

released of the bands and members.

Shown examples of bands first music video - don’t  want to spend so much money but also a good budget.

The amount of scenes from the music video - > 10

Music videos creative director trying to get across a certain image to them.

Just dance by lady ga ga.

Showed a ‘dead party’ then she makes it better.

Lighting makes the video look old, but also highlights the signer or main character, lighting also makes it

look like an actual party they did this also it looks like a disposable camera of weird quality.

A lot of changing places meaning the use of one main light - they are basically cresting their own sun so

the lighting will not change but when they are outside its dark so doesn’t matter.

Kate Perry’s first music video -

Less scenes than the other one as they lasted longer on each scene.

Trying to portray she is wild?

Video is bold even though its not that old.

Trying to appeal to a younger audience as its set up like a sleepover and have a pillow fight.

Though this is set up sometimes to be for older but not really.

Use of male gaze to get views but irl girls will be supporting her at their target audience.

When the song shifts layers it then shifts layers within the music video as their is a certain video used for

the chorus.

Much softer lighting more ‘girly’ so looks likes its involved in beauty and lighting.

Arctic monkeys - bet you look good on the dance floor.

Very simplistic one close up of the singer and then a wide zooming on the band.

Raw singing no filters rough lighting with vivid individual lighting.

Simplistic as its just about the music.

The vibe means its shown for people into rock and into their 20s and 30s.

Their look is very casual but also uniform as they all just have polos and jeans.

Makes it more personal as he sounds like everyone normally.

Cold play - violet hill

Very simple in a white room can see all the equipment being used.

Quite quiet gentle could take your nan or deaf friend to see it.

A bad video as was so easily set up, looks too fake.

Also the fact two of the 4 are wearing the same t shirt, not good as the rest looked stupid not being

uniform and a careless mistake.

Post Malone -

Does not have as many shots as the other solo as it would have taken days to film as he’s in the desert

He was posing a lot of money

Planned it a lot though it has the feeling of just getting cars and driving.

Portraying he’s chilled and rich.

Contrasting the scenery and his outfits and cars.

Analysing this is America

Analysing this is America - link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYOjWnS4cMY

This is America is a very controversial yet strong piece of music and video, this is because the lyrics and

song overall are very catchy but at the same time it is fighting against many things such as racism and gun

violence.

This is shown within the music video as the context of him shooting but also singing with those he shot

shows or represents a false sense of security like they experiences at the time but also now as shootings at

schools and shops which are racially motivated have increased over the last few years.

Thus showing how its not only a troll song in which they exploit the recent events but they also

contemplate for the things in which they can improve on. This is also certain for childish gam-bone

making fun of American patriotism but doing it in subtle ways such as the chorus making it seem as if

shootings is just something that happened in America regularity, as suggested within the title this is

America.

Workshop 1 with Matt

 Workshop 1 with Matt

1st workshop was with Matt and mikes class as he talked about certain things that represent people and

marketing.

In this workshop i did with mikes classic where Matt showed us album covers showing how the image

creates ideas in our minds of what genre it would be.

We then tried to do our own images on the main lawn of hurtwood house will insert later.

Within this matt taught us the natural gaze and observation that a person immediately sees when looking

at people.

He did this in a few ways in which he showed us an image of different not very well known artists and

asking us what genre we thought it was contained within, moat of the guesses where accurate.

He then later asked us about the stereotyped within the rock scene in which he then showed many images

of these stereotypes.

Then we went up to the main lawn to take our own images for photos on the front of an album we did

create ones you would usually see during say a pop or rock band perform.

These are my two favourite shots we got of the album covers as their is a wide variety in which these could cover, thought at the same time the image will stay in your mind with the certain album as they will stick out and are a bit different.

‘Andrew Godwin’s music video conventions theory’.

Andrew Godwin’s music video theory and create a blog post about his theory ‘Andrew Godwin’s

music video conventions theory’.

Andrew Goodwin’s book ‘dancing in the distraction factory’ – 1992.

Bohemian rhapsody was the first music video – slowly became an art form of its own to advertise

the band and said songs.

Andrew Godwin’s theorises that music videos have the following conventions ( common features).

Link between the lyrics and visuals, music and visuals.

Features of genres of music.

Use of intertextual references.

Notions of looking and voyeurism.

Demands of the record label evidence.

Star image a key focus.

Performance based, narrative based and/or concept based.

Examples of very literal videos – Taylor swift – love story (Romeo and Juliet).

Add link and photo when we have Wi-Fi.

Another example is prodigy – fire starter.

Add link and photo when we have Wi-Fi.

These both are very literal as they both represent what is being sung or showed.

Ok go with friends – very disjuncture, wild and weird, serious singing yet silly playful music video.

Amplify – means the song is very out their exaggerated, Miley Cirus – wrecking ball.

Illustrate – meaning of the video is made very clear – Psy – Hangover.

Intertextuality – references eg other video games within one or placed in a film eg ready player one.

Eg thank u next and legally blonde references from legally blonde imbedded in thank u next, it can

even just be because it made you think of some other film.

Voyeuristic – male gaze and use of woman’s bodies to attract an audience. Eg Robin Thicke – blurred

lines.

Reflect on the record label – Stormzy not that deep.

Star image – Taylor swift – wildest dream – she is a famous actor on set? Singing above everyone.

Narrative – coffee and TV by Blur.

First lesson with Stu (Stew)! What is a new campaign?

Now starting my advanced portfolio, which is marked separately.

What we are doing.

A music promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music video (major task), together

with an official social media page for the band or artiste and a digipack for the albums release.

We will then create three task, a music video (main), the Digi Pak and social media (instagram page).

Doesn’t have to be your favourite song! Just one you can stand when editing it.

Promotional campaign. A series of advertisement using various marketing tools that share the same

message and ideas to promote a business or event to a target audience.

A co ordinated series of actions / elements aimed at achieving a shared, defined set of goals.

Both Disney and host use a range of activities and media to build up awareness and demand for their films

and time these to build up anticipation in the run up to the opening weekend.

Trailers, social media, interviews, BTS photos, competitions/giveaways, TV spots, billboards, synergy’s

with toys/costumes/accessory manufacturers, sponsorship with food/drink and other brands, premiers,

awards and critic reviews.

Here is a great example of opposite advertising, showing the realism of groups and the reality of

modelling.

Another example of music video is artic monkeys - i bet you look good on the dance floor, is a great

example of raw skilled music, not dressed posh just casual and in a plain studio.

On the opposite side things such as one direction ‘history’ is a great example of a clean edit signing and a

lot of editing singing and shots.

Richard Dyer - Star Image

 Richard Dyer Star Image.

Richard dyer is a media theorist writer and author.

His ideas including starring is not only in the music sector it is overall stars (celebrity’s).

Book called stars released in the 1970s

About the life or so called life of stars.

According to him, in order to understand the relationship between the music industry and its audiences.

The term star refers to the semi mythological set of meanings constructed around music performers in

order to sell the performer to a large scale (audience).

A star to dyer is a image, he thinks they are created images, by building the persons charecters and

Persona is an image.

He thinks its a commodity of things bought together like sainsburys selling bread.

This is done in a range of materials: videos, artwork, performances and media appearances.

Stars are commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meaning.

Stars depend on a range of things such as TV and radio to distribute their fame and knew news.

Some common values of music stardom:

Youthfulness

Rebellion

Sexual magnetism

An anti authoritarian attitude

Originality

Creativity / talent

Aggression / anger

A disregarded for social values relating to drugs, sex and polite behaviour

Conspicuous consumption, of sex, drugs and material goods

Success against the odds.

Fundamentally the star image is incoherent, that is incomplete and ‘open’.

Dyer says that This is because it is based upon two key paradoxes.

Paradox - two conflicting things present at the same time

Paradox part 2 - the star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer.

This means fans will go away attempting to consume more and more, this is due to the fact they will

always chase something the person does trying to get to know them which in the end is unachievable.

Pick an old artist to see how they have developed.

Here are some examples of the evolution and popularity change of marshal Bruce Mather’s the 3rd (Eminem). He has become a world wide fame for being the first of very few white artists leading the rap scene, he did this through his intellect and social appearance building up his popularity and overall status, thus improving, meaning countless books and movies dedicated to him, and he now meets many other famous people.

Here is an example of people creating a movie about his young life story and success coming up from 5 mile in Compton.

A2 intro

 Music and artists i like.

My own experiances of music live.

I like to listen to music live and also online, I find it really relaxing and great for chilling some of my

favourite genres of music to listen to is things such as rap and RnB, these are great for motivation i listen

to may different songs but when i am out on my bike i listen mainly to rap or rock n roll, so artists such as:

Trippie Redd, XXXtentacion, yeet, sleepy hollow and many more those are just some of my favourite

artists for motivation and drive.

Here is two examples of xxxtentacions covers the top one is widely used as the cover for his unreleased albums due to his sudden death.

The second image is from one of his more famous songs called “sauce” in which is great as the graphics change every shot giving great inspiration.

This third image is from the hit song “the grinch” by Trippie Redd who creates many songs used online and on platforms such as Tik Tok and Instagram.

I have been to a few concerts in my life I have been to ones such as one off concerts in London and a few in Scotland, but none of the massive ones such as reading just because i can never get tickets! I think it would be great to go for the music but also the social aspects, i am going to a few this summer with mates and one with my family.
